Welcome to the world of 4th grade, 2013-14!

Check out what happens in Room 18!

What's Happening in Room 18?

  • In Language Arts, We have just begun our Risks and Consequences unit.  All the stories we are planning to read have characters taking risks and learning to deal with the consequences.
  • Our first topic in Math will Multiplication and Division Concepts.
  • In Science, we are going to focus on how ecosystems work.
  • In Social Studies, we will being with the geography of California, Resources of CA, and Native Americans.
  • We are furiously learning cursive writing!

Classroom/Home Supplies

Because of the budget cuts to all schools, we do not know if we will be supplying the students with crayons, scissors, glue, glue sticks...I suggest that the students have these supplies at school in a pencil case (not a box):  pencils, erasers, erasable pen, pen, correcting markers, protractor, compasses, glue stick, rulers (12 inch), and scissors.  Students should have the same supplies at home as well as lined paper and graph paper.

USB Flash drives

Because we do research, powerpoints, and Microsoft Word in the computer lab, it is recommended that your child have a USB flash drive to save their data.  They will keep it in class.  At the end of the year, I then have them save all our classroom photos taken during the year for your keeping and memories.

Cell Phones

Culver City USD has a cell phone policy at school. Students may bring cell phones to school but they must be kept in their pockets or backpacks.  If a student has the phone out, it will be taken away and kept in the office until school ends.  If it is the second offense, you will need to pick it up. Because of thefts from backpacks or dropping or damage to phones, I keep a basket on my desk, and the students may place it in there until school is dismissed.

Homework is given daily and on the weekends.  Students will receive a home reading log or current event that must be completed weekly.  There will also be projects assigned throughout the year. Please make sure you monitor your child's Weekly Home Bulletin and sign weekly!    Missing homework will result in lower performance grades, missing recess, and low performance grades.

Home Reading Logs/Accelerated Reader

Students should read a minimum of 75 minutes each week.  Students will be taking their STAR reading tests where they will receive their reading level and their Zone (book levels they can can). Students can read my books, any books in your home, or library books.  As they complete a book, they take a quiz and receive points for the number of questions they answer correctly.   Their first semester goal is 12 points!
