Who We Are

We are the special needs committee of the La Ballona PTA, the Equal Access Committee, a social advocacy group comprised of parents of children with IEPs, 504s, and those who wish to advocate, collaborate, and learn more about our community.

The Equal Access Committee is dedicated to fostering and advancing a culture of inclusion at La Ballona, ensuring that every student, teacher, and caregiver feels valued and supported. We are committed to addressing the needs of our students facing diversity or adversity due to mental or physical impairments or disabilities. Our committee provides a range of support services, including information and guidance on accessing special education resources, sensory supplies provisions, and social/communal support. Through these efforts, we strive to create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Each classroom is equipped with sensory boxes stocked with tools and materials specifically chosen to assist students with additional sensory needs while engaging with the curriculum. We’ve collaborated closely with our fantastic Occupational Therapist, Alison Hickey Chen, to ensure these resources are effective and supportive.

In addition to these in-class resources, we also have a dedicated Sensory Room on campus. This space is available to all students, providing them with a place to self-regulate as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The room is filled with items designed to promote sensory input and calming strategies.
